Title of presentation: Building a therapeutic relationship of depth using text
By: Catherine Simpson
This presentation will discuss some of the ways in which therapists can overcome the challenges of communicating via instant messaging, in order for powerful and deep therapeutic relationships to be formed. This presentation is based on the findings of a recent research project conducted with experienced online therapists.
Catherine retrained as a counselling psychologist after an initial career in computer software development. She has gained experience of providing counselling in a variety of settings including drugs and alcohol, adult mental health and health psychology. Catherine currently works within a university counselling service. She first became interested in online counselling when I working as a volunteer at Childline, doing telephone and online counselling with young people, then deciding to investigate the therapeutic relationship in online therapy for a doctoral research project, as part of training in counselling psychology.
